Thanks and more questions
« on: Thursday 07 December 06 19:41 GMT (UK) »
Thankyou. You are truly wonderful. I now have my fathers service no and an entry in the London Gazette for his MBE. Can anyone explain what an additional member would mean. He is listed as a warrant officer but I was told was an acting seargeant major. Why did he get a civil medal. I know he had other medals too and I will try to get his service records. Is there any way to do this on line?

Officer and Other Ranks, NCOs detailed records are not on-line. You would need to visit the NA or pay a researcher to look for you. I don't think your relative counts as a 'real' officer (!) - if he did you can search the NA website to see if you can spot his paper file - and this can be copied for a reasonable cost (assuming not massive). I suspect that the NA or a researcher would charge more for trawling through microfilm and then there may be nothing for your relative there.

His service records will still be with the Army and you will need to apply for copies. The MBE is from the Military Division and so not a civil medal. The Order of the British Empire is a bit of a mess, used to cover all sorts of things. The wartime awards to military people are usually for good and efficient service.

You should find his recommendation for the award at the National Archive.
