1891 CEN. REQ. Barton Regis (Glos) JAMES
« on: Monday 23 February 04 20:18 GMT (UK) »
I'm looking for William JAMES, aged 25, bricklayer.

I have the index for Barton Regis, (Bristol, North and East suburbs) and have found three possibles:

William James ref: 1975/1/7
William James ref: 1967/3/129
William James ref: 1941/3/115

I'm not sure if this is any help but I would be grateful if someone could check for me.

Hi there

I'm looking for William JAMES, aged 25, bricklayer.
I have the index for Barton Regis, (Bristol, North and East suburbs) and have found three possibles:
William James ref: 1975/1/7 - Shoemaker
William James ref: 1967/3/129 – Not on here
William James ref: 1941/3/115 – Not on here
I'm not sure if this is any help but I would be grateful if someone could check for me.

There are 40 William James aged 25 – but only 3 born or living in Bristol

One is a boarder and Shoemaker as above, (1975/1/7) the second I can not find on the return that the index says it is on and the third is also a shoemaker with just his wife

1967/3/129 and 1941/3/115 come back as not on the census – did you make an error either writing it down or typing it out

Hi Chris,

I've just had another look at the CD and those references are the ones given.

I didn't really expect to find William James but I can now eliminate that area if he's not there.

While you are looking at that census could you check for Isaac Cotterell aged 69.  The ref that I have is 1989/2/77.

Thanks for all your efforts.  If we ever meet then I owe you lots of drinks!

Your reference came back like the others did - “no images to view on census”

Entered the name Isaac Cotterell and it came back with the following:

RG12 / 1989/ Folio 77 / Page 18 – Church Road, Westbury on Trim,

COTTERELL Isaac, Head, Marr, Labourer, born Tarrington, Gloucester
Mary A, Wife, Marr, 69, Laundress, Henley on Trim, Gloucs
CATTRELL    Fanny M, Gr Dau, Unm, 11, Westbury on Trym
Mable B, Grd Dau, Unm, 3, Westbury on Trym
William I, Gr Son, Unm, 7month, Westbury on Trim
JAMES Florence A, Grd Dau, Marr, 23, Laundress, Durdham Down, Glous

That info looks like a gold mine if its the correct family.

Brilliant!  That's them.  Florence is the wife of the 'missing' William James.

Thanks a lot, Chris.

Den Ben

Thats fantastic - I get a great feeling of accomplishing something when I get feedback like you just gave.

I should have serious words with the people who compiled that duff CD - obviously something has gone wrong on the indexing.

So, now all we have to do is find James.
