Chris, that's already been a good night's work but since you mentioned the elusive William James.............

I really need his birth details - I know from his marriage cert that his father was Edwin James.

I have found William James on the 1901 census and his birthplace was given as 'London'.  I downloaded a copy of the original enumerator's sheet and it has 'Middlesex' crossed out and London.

I can't find him on the 1881 but I wonder if he's on the 1871 (aged 5) or the 1891 (aged 25)?
