They are all popping out now  :D :D :D

I would think this is son Matthew on the 1851 Census also in Rothesay and also a gardner. Lymington vs. Symington  ::) (thank to brilliant transcription!):

Mathew Cameron    30, gardner, b. Lymington, Ayrshire
Jane Cameron    27, b. England
John Cameron    3, b. Rothesay
Elizabeth Cameron 1, b. Rothesay

Address: 1st Rennies Cottage, Rothesay

Wow, Monica, have you done this before?  ;) Only joking.

I'll need to keep all of this information, just to go through it at a later date and plan it all out. Could you tell me what the reference to the Register of Corrections on Elizabeth Neil's d.c. would be for?

Matthew married a Jane Chambers. As you can see below, very similar names for children as sister Agnes's children:

1. JOHN CAMERON Birth: 26 AUG 1857 Rothesay, Bute, Scotland
2. MARGARET CAMERON  Birth: 18 JUN 1860 Rothesay, Bute, Scotland
3. MARY ANN CAMERON  Christening: 23 MAY 1852 Rothesay, Bute, Scotland
4. MARY JANE CAMERON Christening: 12 DEC 1854 Rothesay, Bute, Scotland
5. DAVID CAMERON Birth: 19 JAN 1865 Govan, Lanark, Scotland
6. ELIZABETH CAMERON Christening: 04 MAR 1850 Rothesay, Bute, Scotland

RE Register of Corrections, you can't tell what it is for from the cert. itself. It simply shows a reference to it (vol/page/date). You would need either a look up (by some kind soul going to Edinburgh) or would need to ask the GROS office in Edinburgh to provide you with this info.

Matthew Cameron is certainly son. This is his marriage entry, an actual extract from the OPRs:

MATTHEW CAMERON
Parents: Father: JOHN CAMERON
Marriages: Spouse: JANE CHAMBERS
Marriage:  09 OCT 1847  Rothesay, Bute, Scotland

Maybe we should have another look in 1841 for the Cameron family in Rothesay?

Sorry, still finding sibling on the 1851  :D

We can now add a Margaret and Isabella Cameron. Isabella is showing as sister-in-law at the household of Peter Dunlop and wife Margaret in Rothesay. A parent search for this Peter and Margaret on IGI brings up:

1. MATHEW DUNLOP  Birth: 14 MAR 1856 Rothesay, Bute, Scotland
2. JANE DUNLOP Birth: 08 MAY 1858 Rothesay, Bute, Scotland
3. MARGARET DUNLOP Christening: 05 MAY 1854 Rothesay, Bute, Scotland
4. ELIZABETH NEIL DUNLOP Christening: 20 APR 1845 Rothesay, Bute, Scotland

In the 1851 Census, Isabella shows as age 28, born in Largs, Ayr. Margaret, same birth place and age 33.

So we now have:

Elizabeth
Matthew
Agnes
Isabella
Margaret
............we're missing a John still  ;D to round off Scottish naming pattern.

Normal health warning on all of this as always, all entries need verification etc....but looking good  :)

I think I have found them in 1841 in Kingarth, Bute, I think.  ??? John, aged 40, gardener, wife Isabella, 30, son Matthew, 26, journeyman gardener, and daughter Mary, 16.

EDIT: More information!  :o

I do think that's them! Isabel/la is a variant for Elizabeth. We have John and son Matthew as gardeners, all showing as born outside of Bute. I'm not concerned about the ages being out, as you have seen, they seem to have gone up and down (not uncommon) and the 1841 census can be particularly unreliable.  I would imagen that the other daughters that we know of Elizabeth, Isabella, Margaret and Agnes would be out of the household working as servants either in Bute or elsewhere.

Well done, good find  :)

I've saved this all to Wordpad, it's just too much to take in for one night!  ;D Thanks, Monica, for all your help, you've solved a lot of mysteries and it allows me to move onto another side.  :D
