X times removed?
« on: Friday 08 December 06 17:25 GMT (UK) »
I'm sure this has been asked 1000 times before, but I'm trying to work out a connection between two sides of a family.

I have blanked out the other side of the family in case the person at the bottom of that side doesn't want them published, but I'm trying to work out the relationship between Colin Tetley a the bottom of the left-hand-side, with the person marked 'X' at the bottom of the right hand side.

They are connected by the same great-great-Grandfather at the top!

Apologies if this has been answered before, and thanks in advance.   :)

Hi Bagpuss Janet

If two people share a great, great, grandparent they are third cousins. They are only "removed" if they are of different generations eg person A is the great great grandfather of one but only the great grandfather of the other. One generation different is once removed, two is twice removed, and so on.

This site probably explains it better!

Hope it helps.

Hi Bagpuss_Janet

I too have always been confused by relationships. I was relieved when I bought Family Tree Maker as I now have 813 individuals in my tree. All I have to do is either run a kinship report or use the relationship calculator. Either of these takes about 1 second and tells me the relationship either between me and everyone in the tree or the specific person I have queried.

It is nice to know why from the answers below but equally it is nice to have it calculated instantly.
