Greenhalgh in Breightmet
« on: Sunday 10 December 06 04:31 GMT (UK) »
I am searching for the immediate ancestors of Phoebe Greenhalgh who was born in Breightmet in 1868.   In particular I am looking for the baptism and marriage of each of her father John born about 1826 and her grandfather Edward born 1796;  they were both born in Breightmet.

I am new to researching in the Bolton area and my immediate problem is that there does not seem to have been a church in Breightmet at the time frame in which I am looking, and I have no idea which church people from Breightmet would have gone to for baptisms and marriages.

I would be grateful for either information on Phoebe and her relatives, or on which parish register I might find their baptisms and marriages.

Many thanks

I tries to find Phoebe in 1871 to determine her mother's name because John Greenhalgh must be one of the most popular names in Bolton.

As  I had no luck, I suggest that you get her birth certificate; this seems a sgood bet

Births Jun 1867
~~~~~~~~
Greenhalgh  Phoebe    Bolton  8c 274
It will give you her father and mother's maiden name making the marriage much easier to find.
Good Luck
Thanks for that Antony.
You could be right and I shall have to find Phoebe's parents through birth and marriage certificates.   I know from the 1881 that her mother was Alice who also was born in Breightmet.
I would prefer to find them through a parish register because this would give the potential to identify many more of the family members.   There seems to be a good chance that the particular register will be available on film from LDS, and I do go to the local LDS Family History Centre every week;  it would be much easier if I knew which register to start with.
I was sorry to read your comment about the popularity of the John Greenhalpgh name in Bolton, I am next looking for Phoebe's husband who was John Lowe "born in Manchester"!!!
Thanks for your help
If Alice is the mother of Phoebe as you assumr from the 1881 census; she would seem to be the mother of Albert too.  Albert was aged 6 in 1881.
Alice was 53. This suggests she was 47 when he was born.
Impossible ? no, realistic, ?
Might she be a second wife ?
There are six John Greenhalgh entries on Free B M D who might have married an Alice between 1871 and 1871. There are another three between 1851 & 1861 ( if we assum that Alice is the mother of all of children on the 1881 census
If you really want to go via a Church Register, I'd joint the Rootsweb Bolton list where Valerie and a colleague go to Bolton Library almost every day.
I still couldn't find them in 1871 even knowing both parents and the kids, but this might be them in 1861
Alice Greenhalgh 34
Ann Greenhalgh 2
David Greenhalgh 11
Frederick H Greenhalgh 7 Mo
John Greenhalgh 34
John Greenhalgh 2
But there's a big age gap between David & the two year olds so the second wife syndrome might b etheer again.
The Parish Church for Breightmet is St James I think.
Good Luck
Brilliant work Mo.   Although it is not unusual to find complete families missing from a census, it is certainly reassuring to fill this gap in the history of this family.
Although there are discrepancies in some of the ages, I have no doubt this is my [wife's] Greenhalgh family.   We can but speculate why the enumerator wrote Partington, but, considering the millions of entries, the occasional mistake is not surprising.
Many thanks
