Hi Sal
Thank you for using some of your precious time looking for me.   I hope to go into Manchester soon - so will look for St. Mary's Bury and check for marriages.  If there is anything you require and I can help let me know.
I can work on Thomas Ogden's baptism from the dates you gave me and confirmed. Will await your results about the marriage of Harriet. Thanks in advance.
Best wishes for the Christmas and New Year.

Hi Helkar

12 May 1851  at St Marys, Oldham

Thomas Ogden    Harriet Grinrod
of age                  of age
Bachelor               Spinster
Boatman               --------
Walk Milne            Walk Milne
Charles Ogden      Edmund Grinrod
Constable              Dresser/Draper?

Thomas and Harriet both made their mark with a x

Witnesses Joshua Partington and Nancy Partington they both made their mark with a x

I couldnt read Edmund Grinrods occupation but it looked like it could have been Dresser or Draper.

The abode for the married couple is as i have typed, i think it should have been Walk Mill?

Hope this helps

Merry Christmas :)

Thanks Sal - I do appreciate you  helping me out.
Edmund was a dresser.  Thomas Ogden - an unusually occupation a boatman - what would be around Oldham doing that job.

Thomas could well have been involved with transporting coal from the collieries in the Oldham area along the Ashton Canal to Manchester or bringing in raw materials for cotton processing in the Oldham mills by linking to the Manchester-Merseyside Canal.

Hi Helkar

As Gillg has said Thomas would probably have worked as a boat man on the canal. Walk mill is an area in Chadderton along the canal near where the river Irk passes under the canal.

Just for interest.

A link to an 1848 map of Walk Mill  http://www.oldmaps.co.uk
If you use grid referance 388970,406400 and click on co-ordinate then search it should take you straight to the map.

There is also a virtual tour of the canal as it is now
http://www.penninewaterways.co.uk/rochdale/rc3.htm

Click on number 6 Rochdale to Chadderton then click on next section until you come to Walk Mill lock.

The canal has been fully restored in recent years and is fully navigable now.

Regards

Sal

Hi Sal and Gillg
Thanks for interesting info. though the 'oldmaps' website has been changed.    The penninewaterways web site sounds interesting for a walk/bike ride (in better weather) around the Rochdale/Chadderton area - Walk Mill   One of Harriet's ancesters lives in New Jersey so could be very interesting for her.
Thanks again
