Where did they live - was there a regional accent which the enumerator did not recognise?

Hi Meles,

She was born and seemed to live all her life in Stafford although I haven't yet found a death reference for her - she married a Samuel Oulton.  Her family were all in the boot and shoe business;  cordwainers, shoe binders and boot needle threaders (whatever they were!)

I suppose there probably was an accent but I just have this 'gut' feeling that it could be Welsh - don't ask me why!

Hello JillJ.   Another possible name is  Hephzibah.  I think a Biblical name.
In George Elliot's novel "Silas Marner"  there is a girl of that name.
Known as Eppie.  Not Effie.

Thanks Gragareth but her birth was registered as Effas so I think I am looking for a name which sounds like this rather than something which can be shortened to it.
