James HELPS and Emily LONG emigrated Australia 1870s
« on: Sunday 10 December 06 15:15 GMT (UK) »
I wonder if anyone coud help me. Unfortunately I don't have much information.
James Helps, born 18/10/1839 in Frenchay, Gloucestershire England was said to have emigrated to Australia with an Emily Long born 1842 in Keynsham, Somerset. THey were said to have married out in Australia in the early 1870s.
Unfortunately I don't know where in Australia and just wondered if anyone could help with passenger dates, marriage dates etc.
Further info I know is that James' parents were Charles and Eliza  formerly of Corsham, Wiltshire, England.
A long shot I know!!

Hi - James Helps married Emily Long in 1871  in Sydney, Nsw. You can go to the NSW registry of Births marriages and deaths on line and order the certificate.
Reg No 1104/1871.

Hi Joanna

Before you pay alot of money for certificates - check the alternatives
http://www.bdm.nsw.gov.au/familyHistory/howToSearch.htm#TranscriptionAgent

NSW certificates usually contain very useful information (Details can be checked here)
http://www.sag.org.au/ozsources/civil.htm

This is the link for searching for your folks
http://www.bdm.nsw.gov.au/cgi-bin/Index/IndexingOrder.cgi/search?event=births

James died in Sydney 1907 ref 12290/1907  and Emily 1917 ref 2495/1917  You will probably find records for the marriage/deaths of some of the children as well.

There is a possible  immigration record on the Victorian unassisted list (which doesn't mean they went to Victoria - but they would have passed through there to be on the list)
HELPS JAMES Age 38 Date JUL 1871 Ship GREAT BRITAIN (age looks somewhat out - could be mis transcription) - Can't instantly see Emily on board however

Hi Joanna
Using both
bdm nsw [above]
and

http://www.naa.gov.au

You can make a couple of connections with your HELPS family
Charles HELPS married Ellen FIELD
Clifford FIELD HELPS enlisted for ww2 .  He was born in 1917.
Also there is Hubert Charles HELPS He married Lillian Lumsden and lists his Next of Kin as Lillian.
He enlisted in ww2 also.

There are further details on the 2 sites and you can send for fuller service histories if you follow the links.

 Hello Joanna et al
I  am a descendant of James and Emily and would be keen to exchange information that may have come to light.
I have been able to trace a couple of genrations of Helps in Wiltshire but still have plenty of gaps.

Helen
