COMPLETED Callway, Chapel-en-le-Frith
« on: Sunday 10 December 06 23:09 GMT (UK) »
Ann HALLAM of 'Callway' -well that is how it appears to read- was buried 12 May 1781 according to Chapel-en-le-Frith Parish Register.

Please does anybody have a suggestion what place this may be?

Sorry John, doesn't ring any bells, nearest I can think of is Chinley which isn't far from Chapel en Le Frith.

Good luck

Please, where did you find Callaway Lane. I've scoured all the maps I can find, but not found it...

googled it then got a result on the Apostle of the Peak which described a  moor above Callaway lane in Chapel and Chinley area but did not find a map as old maps site which was so useful seem to have disappeared.
Will try to put link in
http://www.marchington.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/201-209-CHINLEY-CHAPEL-AND-THE-APOSTLE.htm
it is on page 207 referring to a plot of land

I believe this place to be Cowlow (as in Cowlow Farm on Cowlow Lane, Dove Holes). It is also spellt Caulow in the parish register, and elsewhere I have seen it written Cauloe.

I believe that Ann, who died in 1781, was the widow of Valentine Hallam who died at CAULOW in 1768.

Valentine had a son Isaac, who died at COWLOW in 1778. He married Ann, and their daughter Sarah died at CALLWAY the following year, in 1779.

Hope this helps.

Thank you hallampeakdistrict, that information helps a lot. I am trying to get my head round the Cowlow Hallams. You have made more progress with them than me. I'll send you a personal message.
