'War Operations" October 1940
« on: Monday 11 December 06 06:58 GMT (UK) »
Kia Ora Folks
I need some help! My great gran emigrated to New Zealand in 1878 . I have fairly well and fairly easily established her family tree back to the 1760s. :D
NOW I am attempting to go forwards in the hope that some day I might find some living rellies.!! :)

Esther Alberta FAIRY was born in B'ham 1879 and moved to London with her family c. 1881-1883. I have her in 1891 & 1901 censii and have a marriage cert for 1919 Clapham to Thomas FOLWELL.
Esther was nicknamed Ettie and I have recently  received her death cert.
She died as Esther Folwell widow at Brookward Emergency Hospital Knaphill Woking Surrey  on 16 October 1940. The cause of death was "due to War Operations. "

My first question is:
Were there Coroner's Inquests into civillian war deaths?
If so where should I look?
Next - if this death was due to a bombing or the like  where might I look for the circumstances ?
Esther lived at 284 Clapham Rd Stockwell according to the cert.
I'd be very grateful for any clues/key words as to where or how I would search for further details.

If anyone has found connections to the Fairy/ Folwell/ Bamfield or Day families I would love to hear from you.
TIA
Marlene

Hi Marlene

Take a look at http://www.cwgc.org where you should find her commemorated.

If there was an inquest, it would say so on the death certificate ie. "due to war operations" "after inquest".

You could try "googling" for something like Stockwell and/or Prince of Wales Stockwell with Blitz/Bombed/Bombing

There's a little piece here that mentions the Paradise Memorial Garden which commemorates those killed in the bombing of the "Prince of Wales" - would that be the same incident I wonder?

Many thanks Casalguidi
As usual about 2 seconds after posting my message I thought about CWGC!! ::)
A little more info there as it tells me she was injured on the 13th and died on the 16th!
I'll take a look at the other sites now and do a search for a newspaper report or whatever.  I found a site which told me there was action in October 1940 (after the bombings) re the use of the Underground!
Thanks for your help - a sad end to one of the few people featured in photos my great gran treasured here in Aotearoa.

Hello, Marlene,

I noticed that your Esther Fairy was injured on the 13th & died on the 16th Oct 1940 in Brookward Emergency Hospital, Knaphill, Woking, Surrey

As Esther was admitted whilst alive into hospital & died there, there should be archive material available. Try this site to find where the records are held>>

http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/hospitalrecords/

If that is non productive try an enquiry at >>

http://www.cityoflondon.gov.uk/corporation

This is the London Metropolitan Archives & they may have some relevent info there.

Good luck,

Meliora

Take a look at my page for the Paradise Road Memorial site.
There's a little info about Esther there.
