Can anyone Help

Hello.
Can anyone tell me how can i find out if one of my distant reletive was in the army in and around 1865 onwards(cant find him in the 1871 census) in or around Surrey or Hampshire or if he was a deserter maybe ?  :(
would be greatful for any help.
