Hi Mike

I also am searching the name Gander, unfortunately mine seem to come from the Lancashire area of UK, whilst searching I came across a wonderful web page, this belongs to a Des gander, from the Sussex area, if you google I am sure you find it.

I found him to be extremely helpful and you can also view the family tree on line and contact by email

Good luck, hope your Ganders are easier than mine

Hi Jane,

Yes, thank you. I have spoken to Des many times in the past. He has a fantastic site but, unfortunately, nothing about Edward. He has some on Edwards father, Henry, (10th Hussars), and his brothers but nothing on Edward. I suspect that he stayed in Canada and that is why his brother, George, (my GG Grandfather), transferred to, and stayed here, as well. There is another "Gander" site, here, in Canada. Unfortunately, their ancestors are from Sussex, as well, so it may not help you. http://www3.sympatico.ca/gander/
Thanks again,

Mike,
Here's the movements of the 52nd:
http://www.regiments.org/deploy/uk/reg-inf/052-1.htm

You'll notice the regiment left Canada in 1848, so perhaps you need to try looking elsewhere?

The regiment was in India at the time of the Mutiny in 1857. There was no Edward Gander in the 52nd then as far as the medal roll is concerned, but there was a Pte James Gander and a Pte John Gander. Possibly a connection??

As for his father, Hanry Gander, 10th Hussars, he enlisted in 1800, served at the battles of Sahagun and Benevente (both December 1808), distinguished himself as a sergeant on 7 August 1813, and was pensioned on 15 May 1817 aged 35. He doesn't appear to have been present with the regiment at Waterloo however.

Hi Neil,

That is one of the reasons that I think that Edward may have stayed in Canada. George and John went to India in 1857. (They were all brothers). I have yet to find out how James is related. John died of Cholera in late 1857 in New Dehli. George transfered to the Royal Canadian Rifle Regt and settle in Canada upon taking pension from that regiment.
Sgt Henry Gander was there father, was not at Waterloo, but settled in Lewes where he died in 1861.
I think that George returned to Canada because Edward was there. Seems like a missing puzzle piece, though! :-\

Mike in Canada, looking for GX3 Uncle Edward!
