the gabriel mentioned on the 1841 census is 75 years old, born c1766

Those aged 15 and over were put into 5 year age categories on the 1841 viz 15-19, 20-24, etc.

So 75 years old probably means 75-79 or older which takes it to 1761-66 or before. I'll have a look. Added - no baptisms found on SP.

I've found a Gabriel Park, baptised 8th March 1767, Barony. Parents - John Park and Jean Banks. he was their 7th child.

all born lanarkshire unless stated other wise.

From what Carol says he was a Captain - RN or Merchant Navy and the family seem quite 'posh'. They might well not be in Scotland in 1841  :-\

Thank you all once again for taking so much trouble on my behalf.

You are correct in that my Gabriel was married to Charlotte Louisa.  He was Gabriel William according to his daughter's marriage certificate.
