WW2 - !st Battalion Hertforshire Regiment

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone here has served in the 1st Battalion Hertfordshire Regiment 1942-1946 or has more details on the following campaigns:-

Gibraltar:                 11/04/1943 - 21/07/1944
North Africa & Italy: 22/07/1944 - 02/02/1945
Palestine:                03/02/1945 - 05/08/1946

I'm researching futher into my grandfathers military service (Pvte. Alfred Ames), and would appreciate any help.

Lowestoft Area: Ames, Colby, Knights, Lincoln, Mantripp, Martin, Tripp, Turner.
Durham Area: Barkess, Mushens.

Belgium (Oost Vlaanderen): Baluwé, Bombeke, Boon, De Bock, De Potter, Dua, Latour, Noppe, Thys, Vanden Berghe, Van Hoey, Seghers, Vercheyen, Vergauwen, Wuytack

France: De Cambrai, De Flandres, De Hennin, De Haynin, Denain, d'Ostrevant, De Ribemont, De Roucy, De Valenciennes

Here are the files numbers for the War Diaries at the National Archives at Kew:

1st Battalion Hertfordshire Regiment was a Territorial Battalion.

1. WO166/8724 Jan-Dec 1942.
2. WO166/12565 Jan-June 1943.
3. WO176/204 Apr 1943/Jan,May, June, 1944.
4. WO170/1401 Aug-Dec 1944.
5. WO169/20055 Feb-Dec 1945.
6. WO169/23207 Jan-June 1946.
7. WO261/390 July-Sept 1946.


1. WO166/4339 Sept 1939-Dec 1940.
2. WO 166/4340 Jan-Dec 1941.

You will have to go to the NA to look at them, or get a researcher to do it for you.

As for you G/Fs Service Records you will have to get the MOD to get a copy, here is the address:

Thank you for the information on the file numbers of the War Diaries kept at Kew (that is helpful), and I have already received my grandfathers service records from the MOD, hence my interest in finding out more about the Batallion's service.

Hi, my father served with the 1st Battalion Hertfordshire Regiment from 1940 to 1946. I have just received his war service records back from the MOD and would be really interested in any information that you have been able to find. My dad was Fran Swatridge he came from the East End of London (Isle of Dogs) and was a Lance Corporal. Thanks Alan
