Now Chris to be a good family historian you definately need your glasses on and sometimes, as in my case, a magnifying glass too.   ;D ;D

If you still can't read it you put a copy on here and ask the experts what it says.

Sorry I can't help with the 1901, unless you have an address but I'm sure someone with get back to you about Alfred William.

Good luck

Sylviaann

I can't find Alfred William in 1901 either.  You say he married in 1904 - was this as Alfred William or William Alfred ?  I can only find a William Alfred marriage in 1904 - and that's in Shoreditch (to an Elizabeth Walker or Emily Wilson).

Any chance he could have been fighting abroad in the second Boer war in 1901?

I know, more questions  :-\

Hi
He was Alfred William on his birth certificate
William Alfred on his marriage certificate (he married Elizabeth Walker at Hoxton )
William Alfred on his de-mob papers in 1918 and Alfred William on his memorial card at his death but he was always known as Alf
He was born 1883 how could I find out about the Boer war ?
His mother died in 1897 and he had a copy of his birth certificate (which I now have )dated 1898 I wonder why ? any thoughts would be appreciated
Chris

It sounds as though a post on the Armed Forces board might be in order.

I wonder if he needed a birth cert to join up?

You might get info about any previous service from his attestation papers for the 1914 - 18 war (says she, who knows nothing about these things!!)  Ask on Armed Forces for real advice!

kind regards, Arranroots  ;)

Hi Aranroots
I've just posted a blank message !so bear with me
Thanks for reply
I'm still trying to imagine him going to the boer war I know he went in the 1st w.w. in Aug.1914 leaving a wife and 5 children
I just remember him as a quiet sort of man but he was old by then
Regards Chris
