Harding / Holt marriage 1840s - completed
« on: Wednesday 13 December 06 17:06 GMT (UK) »
My gr.gr.father's brother WILLIAM CLULO married JANE ANN HOLT 1873 in M/c.
On Jane Ann's b.cert. 18th July 1852 in Ardwick her father was WILLIAM HOLT and her mother was MARY HOLT formerly HARDING.

I have been unable to find a marriage for Jane Ann's parents.

Am now in receipt of a marriage cert. for William Holt and Mary HARDY [sic] in 1851 at St. John's church. They were both widowed and living in Ashton Road.
Mary's father was Joseph Taylor - wheelwright and William's father was Lawrence Holt - engineer.

In the 1871 census with William, Mary, Jane Ann etc there are 2 stepsons James[24] and Joseph[26] Harding. Presumably they are not Williams, and Mary may have been married before.
Could Mary have married William using her maiden name? See above!

William and Jane Ann went to USA and had 8 children.I am now in touch with the gr.gr.son of one of them and he would be very interested in any info. about William and Mary Holt

Hi,

On www.lancashirebmd.org.uk there is a marriage of a William Holt to a Mary Hardy or Taylor at St. Johns, Manchester in 1851.  One of the names is the maiden name and the other the former married name.  It is not however possible to distinguish which is which from the index.   As Hardy and Harding sound very similar it could possibly have been an error on the marriage certificate or the later census.

This is just a thought in case you can`t find anything more suitable.

Regards.
Mo

Hi,

This looks like it could be Mary with sons Joseph and James in 1851,

1851  HO107/2231  f.7  p.15  Manchester
Town: Bradford
Ashton Road

Joseph TAYLOR   Head  Mar  55  Millwright  Berwick Upon Tweed
Martha    "  "       Wife     "   4?
Mary HARDY       Daur  Wid   31  Power? Loom Weaver
Joseph  "  "      Granson  U      6  Scholar                     Bradford
James    "  "          "      U      4

The image is faint and I can't make out the other birthplaces, this is how they are transcribed.

Martha  -  Gwennap, Lancashire
Mary     -   Openshaw, Lancashire
James   - Bradford, Lancashire

Maybe someone else can have a look to see what they think.

Regards
Daisy

Thanks for info on 1851 census and marriage of Mary TAYLOR.

I think that the 1851 info is the correct family. In a later census there is a query against Bradford as a birthplace, perhaps because it was thought that Bradford was in Yorkshire, but of course there is a part of M/c called Bradford.

Hi,

Martha Taylor`s birth place looks to me like Pilkington.

On the 1861 census James and Joseph have been transcribed as Holt.  They are on RG9/2870 Folio 113 page 10 with William and Mary.

If you need the details let me know.

I think I may have found birth of Joseph Taylor to Samuel and Elizabeth - christening 7th June 1795, Tweedmouth Northumberland. Mary Taylor[Hardy/Harding/Holt] was born about 1824 acc. to info. in 1871 census. I have also found a marriage to Martha Whitworth 1822, Middleton M/c.
I can not find any of them in the 1841 census when Mary would have been about 17, Joseph 46, and Martha about 40.Has any one any ideas?
