That's interesting Mary, and a good tip.  I confess that it would not have occurred to me to search so long after the death.

Do you know if there is an index for wills that can be searched by individuals? Or can one visit the place in York in person to search?

I haven't really gone into wills before so this is all new ground for me.

It was and still is a little bit new to me but I believe Record Offices do have lists of Wills, those in my experience being Liverpool which have a shelf full of green books giving the listings year by year and Preston (the main Lancashire Record Office) have a cabinet full of microfiches.

Your local Record Office will tell you if they hold any, which years and which areas as some might only have those local ones yet others might hold the indexes for the whole country.
