hi Mattie, You've probably done this already, but after tracing the parents through every possible census until they died, for a possible place of birth, try tracing both Irish born children right up to the 1901 census if possible.
On the 1841 census, were there any other McDermotts or McGrath/Graw on the same page? Even the same street (maybe have to get the census film from the L.D.S. for that).
Reason I'm asking is that families often left Ireland to go to places, and settle initially, beside other relatives or neighbours from their own district in Ireland.
Possibly try to access any christening records for English born children, especially the earlier ones, with a chance of other families names surfacing as sponsors. Then off to find them on '51 census and later.
The Lancashire board might be more helpful with the last idea if you know the religious denomination.
