Searching for details of Emily Selina Frere, allegedly born Chelsea between 1858 and 1863 and a possibly sister Hetty Frere, born 1869 Wandsworth Surrey.

This family have become a brick wall for me as I cannot find them on the census returns.

Emily Selina married Frances Clark and I have her on the census, but cannot find details for birth.  There is an Emily Selina Woolgar Frere which could be her.

On Emily's marriage certificate it states her father as William Frere (a baker), but I can't find William anywhere either.

Can anybody help me please to track down this family.

The Emily Selina Woolgar has her name spelt 'Frear', and so does Hetty Frear, on freebmd as b. 1869 Wandsworth (but married as Hetty Frere, to Richard Smout, in 1897).

I haven't got access to the full 1891 census info, but there's a 'Harriett Frear' who might be your Hetty on there, living at Holborn.  Index gives:
Annie Frear, 1851 Norfolk
Minnie, 1867 (b. Wandsworth)
Harriet, 1869 (b. Wandsworth)
Arthur, 1871
Florence, 1879
Elizth, 1882
Albert, 1883
May, 1886

(Annie seems a bit young to be mother of Emily).

This family are listed as Friar in 1871 in Bow, but the father is Robert, a coach trimmer (children Minnie, Harriet, and Arthur are all there.)

I would suggest getting the birth certificate of the Emily Selina Woolgar Frear as at this point it seems likely that she will be in censuses under a different surname - possibly she was illegitimate and trying to hide it on the marriage certificate.

There is a possibility under 'Frewer' in 1871, RG10/36 82/66 Kensington
2 Norfolk Road Villas
Louisa Frewer, 39, nurse, b. Westminster
Clara, dau, 14, b. Paddington
Emily, dau, 10, b. Marylebone
Rosina, dau, 8, b. ditto
Edith, dau, 6, b. Hampstead
Edward, son, 4, b. Hampstead

maybe?

Thanks Jorose & Emma - I shall follow these up.  I'll definately get the birth cert for Emily Selina Woolgar Frear and ask my friend if she has or intends to get the birth cert for Hetty and we'll go from there.

Thanks for your help

Back to this lady again.  On the IGI, Hetty Frear is the daughter of Sarah Frear.

On the 1871 Census I found a Sarah Frear aged 30 listed as the ad dau (I guess adopted daughter) of William Beedell and his wife Emma.  Also in the household is an Etty Frear aged 1.  The timescale fits in with my research and this is probably the Sarah I am looking for.  How do I go about finding out if Sarah is the adopted daughter.

In 1861 however, I found the same family (minus Etty, of course) but this time Sarah is listed as daughter.  ???

Can't find them at all on the 1851.

William Beedell was from Tiverton in Devon and was a Baker.

Both Hetty and Emily Selina Frere's (name change but I reckon still the same people) marriage certificates say their father was William Frere (can't find him either).  I am now totally confused.

Can anyone find William Beedell on the 1851.

I am waiting for Emily Selina's birth certificate, but I suspect it won't have a father's name on it.

It just seems a coincidence that both William Beedell and William Frere were both bakers.

The birth certificate I have sent for is for Emily Selina Woolgar Frere.  This could imply that someone by the name of Woolgar was involved in conception !!!  I did find a William Woolgar on one of the census returns, but didn't make a note of it, and do you think I can find it now - No.

So who's the daddy  :-\

Can anyone help.
