The case of the disappearing stonemason
« on: Wednesday 17 November 04 14:54 GMT (UK) »
Can anyone help me solve the case of the missing stone mason?
His name is Henry Blackwell and he was born about 1822 in either Newport, Monmouthshire or Stroud, Gloucestershire, depending on which census you believe!!

His first son, James, was born about 1851/52 either in the Forest of Dean or in Haxtey, Gloucestershire.

Where was Henry Blackwell in the 1851 census? Was he in glamorgan?

Any help gratefully received.

Hi Amy, There are 3 matches to the name in Glamorganshire in 1851, but only one near to what his age would have been in 1851.

Just a suggestion...

My gg grandfather was also a Stone Mason. He is listed in every census (except one) as a Stone Mason. All his & his family's BMD certificates describes his as a Stone Mason. His gravestone describe his as a Stone Mason.

But,
for the 1861 Census transcription he is mis-transcribed as a Shoe Maker   ??? It is definately the right person & family as all other details are correct - wife's & children's names, ages, places of birth, address, etc.  The problem I had was that I was looking for a common name (John EVANS) !  Your Henry BLACKWELL should be easier to find...

Good Luck!
