Crimean War - Nurses
« on: Sunday 17 December 06 01:11 GMT (UK) »
Hi All

Does anyone have access to the names of Florence Nightingale's 38 nurse?  Or other's who followed them?

My GG grandmother Margaret Anne Fenwick was in Turkey in 1856 (birth of first child Margaret Jane Dorman).  After her husband's death she worked as a nurse in England so I am thinking maybe she went to the Crimea as a nurse.  ???

Thanks, Jane

Hi Jane !

Thought you might be interested in this clipping of the Times ! and don't know if your GG Grandmother was there but I think the 38 were a selective group ... " nuns and ladies " etc !!

There is also a Florence Nightingale Museum .... might be worth an email !!

Hi Jane,

If you are able to get to the PRO/Kew, there are some records that might help;

c.1851-c.1856 Letters of recommendation for nurses applying to go to the Crimea, arranged alphabetically in bundles WO 25/264

1853-1857 Nurses in the Crimea. Correspondence and memoranda WO 43/963

1855-1858 Lists of ladies, nurses and orderlies embarked for England from the Crimea WO 43/991

Regards,

Arf :)
I am sorry but my emails are not working.

Hi Arf

I had seen that site and I have asked Santa for a ticket to England but, as I'm in Perth, Western Australia, the trip to Kew will have to stay on the wish list  ;)

Its only a theory that Margaret Fenwick was a nurse in the Crimea at this stage so although I could commission PRO or another researcher to check those records for me, I'm reluctant to fork out the funds to do so.  Might come to that though.  :-\

Cheers, Jane

Hi Sue

Thanks, I knew there must be a list somewhere!  Unfortunately, no sign of my gg granny   :( , so there goes another lovely theory  ::).

Still, the information may well help some other Roots Chatter

Cheers, Jane
