1861 Census - James Cording
« on: Sunday 17 December 06 05:07 GMT (UK) »
I am trying to locate James Cording in the 1861 census.  I have located him for all the other years, it is just the 1861 that I am missing.  The 1851 UK census lists him as being 17 years of age and born Carhampton, Somerset.  He is in the U.S. by the time of the 1871.  The 1900 US census indicates 1862 as being the year of his arrival in the United States.  However I have not been able to find him in the UK in 1861.  Thanks very much.

Have you found his parents in 1861? They have living with them a daur in law (Elizabeth)  & grandson who don't belong to any of the children left at home.  I was wondering if this could be the wife of your James?

I have that information, Trish, but thanks anyway.  Elizabeth was married to Gregory the brother of James.

Newfy, the grandson was 4 months, so I would say that Elizabeth was with her in-laws to get a bit of a helping hand with the baby.

Still no sign of James, though.  Maybe I will have to start checking the immigration records in case the year of his arrival in US is wrong.

Hmmm.  Further research shows on the 1880 census that he had a 20 yr old daughter born in Canada, so it looks like he went there first.  Looks like I will have to review the immigration records with this in mind.

Thanks for the update - seems they either stay in the one village for 500 years or get the travel bug and try out a few places  :D   :D  - happens today as well I guess!
