Hi Jimmy

Have looked on the 1891 census on-line and there are 97 people with the surname Hitchin in Lancashire but ....
Not one single person of those 97 are shown as either being born in Pemberton or living in Pemberton

Was Johnson the eldest child? – Do you have any more info on the family?
If Johnson was the eldest in 1901, then his parents possibly had not met each other yet.

What other information did the 1901 census give you.

One for You to follow up Chris, and remember its HitchEN.

Johnson (7 in 1901) would seem to be the eldest child, associated with John age 38 (Labourer in Coal mine) in 1901, and Sarah aged 29.

There is another Johnson  age 16/17 in 1901 too. Age diff. of John & Sarah suggests a second marriage?

Hi there Pauline

"One for You to follow up Chris, and remember its HitchEN"

If you are just tracing one spelling variation of the Hitchin/en family , then you are going to miss an awfull lot of Ancestors.

Remember, most of our ancestors could not read or write - so if when they got married, were baptized or filled in census returns - it was spelt how that person who was writing the information down actually heard it.

If the name sounds the same when you speak it, then more than likely it is the same.

Will now recheck the 1891 census for you

but on a second look, there are 76 Hitchens in Pemberton (yes, point taken)

This one looks very promising:

Thanks Chris.  Johnson was the eldest, and my guess is his parents married in about 1892/3.

I have not looked at the 1901 census - other than the PRO index - but of course I can access the full details even from here (New Zealand), but I am very new at this game and have put off investing much money until I know better what I am doing.

Other info: there were two more children (who lived), Ellen, born in 1905 (my mother) and Joseph, probably born 1902/3, but not sure.

I have looked thoroughly through the 1891 census, but cannot positively identify who they might be.  Pauline seems to have some idea worth persuing.

I am 99.9% confident of the spelling Hitchen.

Thanks again........Jimmy.

Thanks Pauline, this looks very promising.  I had both John and Sarah on my (very long) list of possibilities.  How did you work out this connection?  The only way I can see to provide certainty of identity is to consult the 1901 census
for the family I described.

I know maternal grandmother was still alive in 1933, and died sometime between '33 and '38, but I have still not yet been able to identify her from the PRO deaths index.  He died earlier, but I don' yet know when.

They are still a bit mysterious (to me), but perhaps not so mysterious as my paternal great-great and great-great-great grandfathers, who seem to appear out of nowhere, the go back again, leaving no record of departure, but that is another story I may be looking for help over soon.

Thanks again......Jimmy.
