Hi Alex and Jan,

Could you tell us where your friend has already looked so we don't duplicate searches that have already been done?

Hi Jean,

He looked in St Mary Astbury

Francis should have been christened there as in 1841 he was born in that parish ?

Hi Alex and Jan,

The 1841 census doesn't give a place of birth, so all you can tell from this is that Francis was born in Cheshire (somewhere!) The 1841 index ref is HO107 119/14/17 Page 29.  He was living in Astbury at the time of the census.

Do you have the details of his marriage and was he of the parish in 1835?  Were there any Copestick witnesses that we can try to trace?  Always a difficult one as the 1851 census is the first to give a place of birth and he was inconsiderate enough ( ;) ) to die in 1847!

Your request drew my attention because of the name.  I have some Copestick connections in Staffordshire through marriage with my Astbury line (surname not place).  I have just checked my notes and I think that part of this line were Catholic, so it may be another avenue to pursue.

There is another Copestick marriage at Astbury:

Anne COPESTICK m Thomas PEDLEY, millman 17 Mar 1823 Astbury

Anne is possibly the sister of Francis.

Hi All

Just had a look round and I get the feeling that Francis may have been born in Derbyshire.

I looked for a John Copestick in all Cheshire indexes and found 1860 a death in Congleton aged 80

1841 census HO107-119-14-F14-P20  Canal Street Congleton

John Copestick head 60 farmer not born in county
Elizabeth 60 not born in county
William 30 not born in county
Thomas 15 born in Cheshire
Sarah 14 born in Cheshire

Thier address is next to Congleton Moss.

The 1851 and 1861 census shows the above William being born in Cubley Derbyshire.

The father John in 1851 is shown living with a married daughter Hannah Ball in Congleton, and it states born in Congleton, but as his name is at the bottom of the list and the rest of the family were all born Congleton it may have been a slip up. Or it could another John Copestick.

It would seem that Cubley is on the Derbyshire/Staffordshire borders and the early parish records are kept at Litchfield Records Office. Some later ones 1813 + are in the IGI.

hope this is helpful
