Salford Inquest 1989
« on: Wednesday 20 December 06 19:03 GMT (UK) »
Does anyone know where I can find details of an inquest held in Salford/Manchester in 1989?

I have the death cert; a cousin I never knew I had sadly.

I have a feeling (but I'm sure someone will put me right on this) that coroner's records are not released to the public.

You might find a report in a local paper. If you are within reach of Manchester Central Library, there are microfilm copies of the Manchester Evening News, and possibly the Salford City Reporter too.
Byers (Salford & London)
Stringfellow (Salford & Chorley)
Holmes (Manchester & Birmingham)
Goulding/Golden (Birmingham & Lincolnshire)
Bassett (Manchester & Salford, Staffordshire)
Child (Lincolnshire)
Belshaw (Salford)
Hallsworth (Eccles & Salford)
Vernon (Bury & Chapel en le Frith)

Census information is Crown Copyright, from www.nationalarchives.gov.uk

A coroners report and an Inquest are two seperate things.

A coroner is informed of a death, if they feel that it was "suspicious" and the facts need to be established then an Inquest is arranged - the records are similar to Court records . If the death was not "suspicious" then the report (which can just be a couple of sheeis of A4) is kept for 15 years and then can be disposed of - sometimes to the local history archive.

There is a case now where the next of kin of British soldiers killed in Iraq are suing the Mod,  parents  has been charged up to £600 for  photocopies of the inquest report. If you do a Google search you should be able to find  the story as it was in the papers at the begining of the month.
