3rd Dragoon Guards
« on: Thursday 21 December 06 23:08 GMT (UK) »
Would anyone have information on the 3rd Dragoon Guards.   Gt ......... was Sergeant Major when married in 1824.   Went to Ireland c1825  then finished up in Ireland around 1836  Must have died between 1841 (on census) and 1851  If he died in Forces - where would you look?
name   John Chilton.

Hi Helkar

You need to plan a trip to Kew - if he was in the British Army his records will be at the National Archives.  You should be able to find his discharge or death.

Have you looked for his death in the GRO index?

If he served a sufficient time to be discharged as a Chelsea pensioner then up to 1854 there is an online index on The National Archives website.

Is this him?

WO 97/29/28
JOHN CHILTON Born FISKERTON, Nottinghamshire Served in 3rd Dragoon Guards Discharged aged 48 1805-1830

If so you can order his records online from The National Archives.

Hi Bill and Valda
Thanks Bill - Have started to look thru GRO index - thought Kew was the best course.

Thanks Valda  - no I don't think this is my John.  My John Chilton was born ?1798 in Bristol as I understand - though I find a John C in 1800 living in Farmbrough  -  He married an Esther in1824 -  in 1851 was a widow living in Manchester with sister's family   I guess he joined around age 17  and presume he was still in the forces when he died (between 1841-51)

If John died while still in the army the quickest way to track his military record is through the 3rd Dragoons' musters at The National Archives.
The TNA research guides are here

http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/researchguidesindex.asp

scroll down and look for

British Army: Muster Rolls and Pay Lists, c1730-1898

GRO overseas index may have his children's baptisms if they were baptised by an army chaplain - the index starts well before the beginnings of civil registration.
