Thomas and Sarah Ann BARDSLEY to Australia
« on: Friday 22 December 06 01:38 GMT (UK) »
My g grandparents, Thomas and Sarah Ann Crewe, emigrated to Queensland from Lancashire in 1863 on the ship "Rockhampton" into Kepple Bay.  I understand, from a distant relative in England, that Thomas' sister and her family (Mary and George Travis and children) then migrated to Victoria between 1881 and 1888, although I am not sure when or on what ship.

A third member of the family (also Thomas' sister) is also said to have migrated here, but none of my family knows when, where or how.  It would have been sometime between 1871 and 1881 as they were present on the 1871 England census but not on subsequent censuses.  They were all born in Lancashire (probably Oldham) and are -

Thomas Bardsley b 1825
wife Sarah Ann b 1832
children John T b 1864, Fred b 1866, Elizabeth b 1868, and Ada b 1870.

I am assuming they came to Queensland or Victoria as their siblings were there, but I may be way off the mark there.

Any help or advice on where and when they came to Australia would be very much appreciated as I would like to make contact with their descendants if possible.

Do you know if there was a little Nellie Travis?
Here is a Travis family into Vic. in the right time slot.
Ignore the age of Mrs.  Mistakes like that are common.
Father possibly came ahead to pave the way.

Thank you for that Sue - they did have a daughter Eleanor who I think was known as Nellie, but she would have been 25 in 1887.  I am also having trouble fitting the known children of George and Mary Travis with the dates of the "master travis"es.  The dates and names I have of the children are -

Elizabeth 1860, Eleanor (Nellie) 1862, Ralph 1863, Eliza Ann 1865, Tom 1866, Harriet 1868, George 1870., Harry 1872 and Maria 1875.

The 4 youngest boys would have been 15, 17, 21 and 24!

The entry for George fits as he was born about 1836 and apparently died in Sunbury, Victoria in 1888.

Any thoughts?

The death certificate of George will tell you how long that he had been in 'the colony' and how long in each State.  That can narrow the time frame you are looking at.

Thank you Christine and Jenn,

I checked the Vic BDM and downloaded an image of George's death registration and it didn't give me any information at all, it didn't even record details of his marriage.

So I started thinking, did he come out here without his wife and died before they arrived?  So I checked the 1891 and 1901 censuses on Ancestry, and his wife and family are still in England on both censuses, and Mary is listed as a widow!  I also found the marriage of one of his daughters, Harriet, in Apr 1889 in England and another, Eleanor or Nellie, in 1884 also in England.

So, as so often happens in this fascinating hobby, the information I was given was wrong about George and Mary Travis - George did come and died but Mary and family hadn't migrated before 1901.  Descendants may have and that will be the next search to do.

I still don't know about Sarah Ann and Thomas Bardsley, so any assistance with them would still be appreciated.

Thank you very much to all of you have helped with the Travis' family.

Merry Christmas to you all.  Paul

Just checked again Jenn and he is definitely recorded on the 1881 census with his wife and family.  I suppose that doesn't actually mean that he was actually there on census day - we all know how easy it is to get one past the census collector now and I presume it was probably easier back then.

That arrival you found certainly sounds a definite possibility as the age fits perfectly.  The Geo Travis on http://proarchives.imagineering.com.au who arrived on the Cephalonia in 1883 aged 46 is also a pretty good match and does fit the time frame.

I know what they mean now by starting from yourself and working back rather than the other way round.  I wouldn't be going to all of this effort if I didn't want to make contact with living descendants.

Anyway, one step at a time.

Thanks again for your assistance Jenn.

I couldn't find any sign of your BARDSLEY family in Victoria.
