Hi Thudders,
There is a marriage registration in Dec Quarter 1862 for a John Hill in Clifton. It does not say to whom.
Since his children were born in that area, it may be to your advantage to work backward from their birth certificates using the information off them. They were registered in Clifton.
It is very likely that his wife's surname may be varied depending on how she pronounced it even her first name!
Oh, before I forget, the registration information is: John Hill, Dec Quarter 1862, Clifton, Vol. 6, pg. 254. (Note: correct volume number should be 6a--probably need a new pair of glasses!)
Strangely, there is an Amelia Rosa Hill in this same quarter! Wondering if she is yours? Yet the information showed a list of possible spouses, no John Hill.
Another thought--she may have changed her surname because it is so difficult for the English to pronounce it which possibly have annoyed her to no end. L'Annean and Lanot are good examples as pointed by Liverpool Annie.
Hope you could ring the local register office and to ask for a confirmation on this John Hill marriage. I would use all the information I could gather on their children's birth certs, just in the case to check against the info you may have gotten off his marriage entry.
Wish you the best of luck and may the New Year bring good tidings to you!!
Kind regards,
Tees
