Hi Mike,
that's a very kind offer.  Thank you very much.  Please don't put yourself out on my behalf but if you can fit dear old John Hill in, then great. Good luck with your campaign for longer opening hours at Jersey Archives.

Annie, thank you for all your kind help too.

Have a great new year.
Kind regards,
Thudders

Hi Thudders ... you probably have this already about the 61st !! .... but this could be the reason for John marrying late !  :)

Quote
In April 1859 the 61st left Delhi, marching the 800 miles to Bombay, which they reached in 93 days. Then they marched to Poona, arriving after a 3 month march. "At the end of a long day the men were so parched with thirst that they would drink anything they could find, often plunging their heads into the dirtiest water, even if it were covered with a green scum. While in barracks at Poona an epidemic of cholera broke out in the Regiment. When the men felt the first intimations of cramp they would be walked briskly up and down by their comrades. Cholera also broke out on board during the voyage of the Regiment to Mauritius."
Finally, the Regiment was ordered to return to Bombay and embark for Mauritius. They served there for another 11 months, leaving for England in July 1860, landing in Plymouth 14 years after leaving England.

I have a strong feeling ... this is your Maurice Lanot in 1861 .... !!  ::) just as an aside ...... to me - looking at the image it looks like Maurice " L'anneau " which sounds like " Lanot " to me  ::) also Jean is French for John ........ thought you might be interested !!

Hi Thudders,

There is a marriage registration in Dec Quarter 1862 for a John Hill in Clifton. It does not say to whom.

Since his children were born in that area, it may be to your advantage to work backward from their birth certificates using the information off them. They were registered in Clifton.

It is very likely that his wife's surname may be varied depending on how she pronounced it even her first name!

Oh, before I forget, the registration information is: John Hill, Dec Quarter 1862, Clifton, Vol. 6, pg. 254. (Note: correct volume number should be 6a--probably need a new pair of glasses!)

Strangely, there is an Amelia Rosa Hill in this same quarter! Wondering if she is yours? Yet the information  showed a list of possible spouses, no John Hill.

Another thought--she may have changed her surname because it is so difficult for the English to pronounce it which possibly have annoyed her to no end. L'Annean and Lanot are good examples as pointed by Liverpool Annie.

Hope you could ring the local register office and to ask for a confirmation on this John Hill marriage. I would use all the information I could gather on their children's birth certs, just in the case to check against the info you may have gotten off his marriage entry.

Wish you the best of luck and may the New Year bring good tidings to you!!

Kind regards,

Tees

Tees, Annie,

Thank you both very much.  There's plenty for me to research now.

I'm grateful for your help.

Hi Thudders,

I have double-checked on the Clifton births of the children. On IGI, they were christened in Bristol, Gloucester and the parents were: John Hill and Emily Hill.

BUT you are very fortunate that their firstborn's christening clearly stated her mother was Emily Eliza! This is the only record with her full two first name. Sadly, with many christening records, they nearly never list mother's maiden name!

So I am giving you the information:

1) Georgina Mary Hill
     Births Mar 1865
     Clifton 6a pg 77

Christened on 16 Apr 1865 in Bristol, Gloucester
Parents: John Hill & Emily Eliza Hill

2) Albert Bruce Hill
    Births Dec 1867
    Clifton 6a pg 70

Christened on 05 Jan 1868 (that probably account for his age 3 on 1871 Census)
Parents: John Hill & Emily Hill

3) Arthur William Hill
    Births Mar 1871
    Clifton 6a pg 139

    Christened on 05 Mar 1871
Parents: John Hill & Emily Hill

There is no church marriage records on John Hill and Emily Eliza in Bristol, Gloucester which made it very likely that the marriage registration I found for you was done in the Register Office. It has to be your couple.

Unless they already had married in Jersey...that would be quite a surprise to us!

Cheers,

Tees

PS I have checked to see whether your couple had further children besides three above...it seems they only have three unless they had moved to another part of England that I was not aware!

Tees,
thank you very, very much.  I have just placed an on-line order for the marriage certificate.  I'll let you know how it goes once it arrives.

There were two more children in the family - Francis John Hill (my great grandfather, born 29 Jan 1876 in Clifton) and Emily Mabel Hill, born 17 Jan 18779 in Clifton.

I have quite a bit on Francis Hill as he served in the Navy and the Coast Guard.  I even have a photo of him looking out from a lighthouse!

What a great way to end 2006!
Thank you all.

Hi Thudders,

Glad to be of a wee help to you!

Did you put down the volume 6a for the marriage registration? I hope so! I did not realise my error until now... :-[

Do let us know how you are getting on with this marriage registration.

Will check on your other two children you mentioned to see if they are on IGI or not...

Indeed, it is a nice note that year 2006 ends on this. :)

Best wishes for your quest in 2007!! May it be successful one!

Kind regards,

Tees

Hi Thudders,

Fascinating! Wondering why last two children was not listed on IGI??

Perhaps the family had moved to another part of England after Emily Mabel was born?

Hope you do have information on these person(s)! Glad you have a bit on your Francis John Hill!

Kind regards,

Tees
