Hi Sandee  :)

I had a look on the 1851 and 1861 censuses, just in case  :-\

What was interesting was that there were a number of Smiths scattered around England who had been born in Italy; one of whom was a travelling musicial  :)

Do you have any idea of his age at death/marriage/birthdate?

You do not need to be a member of ancestry to search the birth index.   Go to BMD records and choose the complete version.  You can then look at each quarter in the year.   I should check all the Louisa Jones marriages and then cross check it with Smith to see if you find a matching reference.  A long tedious job though so finding out a few more definite facts, such as his age, would help greatly.  As he married in 1864 he may well have been born pre 1837 so the marriage is not going to be in the index there anyway.

It might be recorded in  other sources though, sandee.

But first, have you got any idea of Nicholas's (m. 1864) age?

Thanks Sandee, that makes him born around 1835/6.

Now, it might be possible to check him more thoroughly on a UK census if he was ever here.

Alternatively, I notice that he came to New Zealand from Victoria. I don't know much about Australian records, etc. but  are there any places in Victoria that might be called Italy - or a similar sounding name.
