1939-1945 Commando Sleeve Badge - Help!!
« on: Monday 25 December 06 15:16 GMT (UK) »
Seasons Greetings Listers,

Can anyone help me with this query?

I was talking to my Brother-In-Law yesterday and he asked me for some help with a photo he has of his Dad in WW2 uniform.  Sadly his parents have passed away now.

In the photo his Dad is not wearing a cap or beret, but a sleeve badge is visible that has two bells on it.  There are no other identuifying marks (or so I am told - I have not seen the photo myself).

He has been told that his father was a commando.  Can anyone help me identify this badge?  I have been unsuccessful with a search on the net.

Thank you, Nick.

without seeing the badge itself I think that it could be the insigina for the 47th (London) infantry division. This was two bells set side by side at an angle hanging from a ribbon (going straight across from left to right). Both bells and ribbon were red in colour and the cloth backing was coloured black. It is known as a rebus which is a visual pun, in this case the bells standing for the "bow bells".

hope this helps .......perhaps Dortmund can get an image for you to view.

As Old Rowley has said the insigina could be the 47th (London) Inf Div. Below is the formation patch for them worn on the sleeve of the uniform.
