Hi ...I think Slimbridge as well.

Have looked at the Slimbridge marriages and have these....

James Hopton m Elizabeth Farmer  18 May 1790
son James Baptised  9 Oct 1790

William Hopton m Ann Martin 7 Mar 1773
son James bap 24 Dec 1778.

   Other Hoptons also marry here....

George to Ann Curnock  10 July 1798
Samuel to Ann Hawker  22 Jun 1811

         might give some clues.

Had a quick look at the IGI and there appear to be 2 Slimbridge births, but maybe one is a bit late?

Also James HOPTON b Trevethin 1817, mother is Mary, not Amelia.  I had wondered whether James met Amelia on his way to Wales, but maybe she was already there?  In which case you are looking for a later marriage and poss death for Mary.

Thanks to Tazzie and Arronroots. I will follow up these avenues. I hadn't seen James Hopton 1817 in Trevethin. I see that he died, so that would explain another James in 1823. I like the idea of a second marriage for James senior.
