USA to UK 1930's onward
« on: Thursday 28 December 06 01:06 GMT (UK) »
Can someone please tell me how to find family members coming from USA back to UK from the 1930's onwards.

I have a family that I thought had settled permamently in the USA only to find one who had definately returned home.  The family originated from South Wales.

Any help appreciated.

Thank you.

Ship records will be at the National Archives - but they are organised by port and then date and not indexed, so not much help if you only know that he returned in the 1930s.

Otherwise, the resources would be the same as for any other post-1900 research:
http://www.ancestry.co.uk/search/rectype/vital/freebmd/bmd.aspx - you can look for his marriage/death here.
http://www.gazettes-online.co.uk/ - might find him in WWII mentions of those recieving medals, also info on things like inheritence, bankruptcy and name changes are found in the Gazette.
Census information is Crown Copyright, from www.nationalarchives.gov.uk
