I think that 1861 Census entry is likely to be the Mary b. 1838. Just thinking through what we have to date.

If George Cooper Snr. died shortly after son George was born in 1834, it could be that Margaret went on to have another child with someone else (or took in someone else's child - might explain why she didn't know where she was born but she was a Gordon). George and Mary are both out of the household in 1851 where Margaret shows living alone and George working in a farm.

Mary falls pregnant and continues to work following the birth of her child Mary c.1854. The child Mary is taken care of by 'grandmother' Margaret Robertson Cooper as showing in the 1861 Census.

Joe, I agree that father to this Mary is not George (too neat!). The names of John b. 1874 would make you think that someone else was father. However, not knowing anything about the Mary b. 1838 and who her parents were........hard to say anything about the additional names for John.

I do at least think we may have found John's grandmother. Pity we have all these potential illigitimate births getting in the way  ;)

Wasn't it a John Cooper not a George Cooper that married Margaret Robertson in 1831? Then they had a son George b. 1834.

The 'grandmother' (Margaret Robertson Cooper) dies in 1866. Mary Gordon (b.c1854) was only 12.  Where did she go??  Perhaps she joined her mother at this point?

Finding the 2 Mary Gordons (b. 1838, b. 1854) in 1871 might help.

Yes Joe, that's what makes me think it's probably her.

I had looked up the IGI to see where John was born and that was in St Nicholas, 3 years later.

I'm tripping up....it should be John not George Snr. husband to Margaret Robertson.

Hi Elaine,

Very interesting!!!!  From  all the records I have seen  John Charles Hunter Gordon was the name listed.  Then when John's son William is born he is writing his name as John Charles Hunter Paterson Gordon and names his son William Paterson Gordon.  No signs of any Patersons anywhere.  No Charles Hunters either though!!!

Perhaps George Paterson's son William Paterson was the father, hence the grandson William Paterson Gordon.!!!

Is Mary Gordon with this Patterson family in 1881 too??

Thank you very much!
