Mayor of Gravesend

Looking for a Mayor of Gravesend between 1896-1920.  Perhaps married to a woman last name of Wheeler. Thanks, Laverdiere

Have you tried Medway CityArk? They are bound to know, as Gravesend is part of Medway.

I would suggest trying Gravesend Local Studies at Gravesend Library

Gravesend doesn't actually come under Medway ;)

In 1892 George Matthews Arnold was the Mayor. Not sure if he was still Mayor within the time you are looking for.
Best wishes......Iris  :)

Thanks Iris.  I think it was a bit before my great-gran's time.  She was born 1896 but remembered visiting her aunt and uncle in Gravesend as a young girl.  Laverdiere

Good to know.  Though the parish records are on the Medway site.  Laverdiere

Hello Laverdiere,

I have just acquired a nice book - Gravesend Chronology. In the back is a lst of the Mayors. The names covering your period are:
George M Arnold
John Russell
John Nat Willis
John Hanks Cooper
Henry Edward Davis
George Naylor
Thomas Sandford
Frank Goldsmith
Alfred Edwin Enfield
Henry Huggins
James Berrey
James Alfred Axcell
Walter J Harrington

Some of the mayors servered several terms of office. Sorry but no help with working out if they were married to a 'Wheeler'.

Regards,

Guy
