I have John Appleby's Birth Certificate.25th July 1894 in Athlone Ireland,Father Joseph Appleby R.A.49179 Br.Wh. and Catherine McGauran, sorry but does anyone know what Br.Wh.stands for.

that's good news. Was Kathleen born in Ireland too?
I'm just thinking that you might be able to get a marriage certificate now as well which would give a little more info re Cattherine.
It might be best if you post on the Armed Forces (?) site on rootschat to ask for an explanation if there is no reply here.
