Trying to find William CLAY
« on: Saturday 30 December 06 14:50 GMT (UK) »
I am trying to find William Clay born between 1813-17 (dependent on census) in Shawbury, Shropshire.  I have on his marriage cert that his father is also William, on the marriage cert and on the 51 census he is living Tunstall, Staffs.  I don't seem to be able to find him in the 41 census, or record of his birth, any help much appreciated!

Thanks
Joanna

There is a William CLAY a 27 year old male servant (born in county) in the household of James Acton a farmer at Selattyn
Ho107/916/5 folio 46 page 7

Of course, if this is your William it doesn't a great deal.

Is his father's occupation given on the marriage certificate?

Will snr occupation was flax dresser and Will jnr a labourer.  Someone found a burial for a William in 1836, I don't know if they would have put deceased on the wedding certificate.

Hi Joanna

I've found a Christenig that possibly could be fit:

William CLAY at St. Martins, Shropshire 19/2/1815, parents William and Anne  - is St Martins at Shawbury, perhaps?

There is another christening which IS at Shawbury but is a later date of 27/7/1823 BUT parents are given as John and Elisabeth

More likely to be the first one do you agree?

Regards, Graham

Just looked on multimap and St Martins looks to be quite a distance from Shawbury.  It can't be the later date as I have evidence of William's father being William!

Unless William snr moved up to St Martins before he had junior christened.
