TORRANCES in Fermanagh
« on: Saturday 30 December 06 22:02 GMT (UK) »
Hi

Am looking for info re siblings of Hugh torrance (Torrens) who married Margaret Thompson in Femranagh in 1876. (Eniskillen meeting House Tempo). They left Ireland and came to paisley- Scotland sometime in year or two after that.

I have their marriage cert and know his father was also a Hugh and Margaret's dad was a William.

If anyone has any info I'd be very grateful

Thanks

Ann

Ann- IGI lists a son to Hugh Torrens & Margaret Thompson: William Torrens born 22 Feb.1878 Cleen, Fermanagh, Ireland.
This gives you a possible location to search for Torrens family. Another source will be church records as birth registration only began in 1864.

Ta Aghadowey

Had found William. there was also a Hugh (son) before him. rest were born in Scotland.

What trying to find out is who Hugh (dad) siblings were and where they were from etc.

But thanks for tip re church records. reckon that's where they'll be. If only was available on line! Sigh!

Ann-
www.irishgenealogy.ie/search.cfm will give lists of births, marriages and gravestones (you can select 'Fermanagh'). However, births will only show names and year (not exact date, place, parents), etc.
Cleen is in Aghalurcher parish but not sure which churches are in that area. Does the marriage take place in that area? Although it was usually in the bride's church, it is at least a starting point.

Ta. The marriage took place in the meeting house in tempo. Haven't worked out where that is exactly yet.

Any ideas ?

Cheers

'Meeting house' could be Presbyterian, although there are lots of Methodists in Fermanagh. The certificate should give name of clergyman- have a list of Presbyterian ministers which I could check.

Sometimes when I'm having difficulty with old handwriting I trace the word and it does seem to make the word easier to read.
Could you post signature here to see if anyone can read it?

Hi Ann,

I'm chasing a Jane TORRANCE (Torrens?) who reputedly married Samuel FRAZER c1780, location unknown but probably Down/Armagh/Fermanagh. Have you come across anything like this?

Regards,
Bruce Frazer (Meggsy), Melbourne Aus.
