This has to be her family.

Ann Martin placed "her mark" on her marriage cert in 1852 when she married John Barnicoat.  He died in 1868 and in 1871 Ann Barnicoat is shown living with her family and step son Andrew in Falmouth.  They then all (?) move north to Lancashire to a town called Rochdale and Ann died in Nov 1895, just 6 weeks after her son, Nicholas, married.

Your offer of information therefore is gratefully accepted.

Many thanks....and enjoy your hols!

Dear meggles

I hope you are still out there.
I found the post regarding the Martins and was wondering if you would be able to tell me about James Martin b1811 who married Mary Ann Martin b1811. All I know is his father was James and his mother Margaret Vray (not sure on the spelling) James is my direct line. James died 1878 in Maryborough,Victoria Australia.
Another Martin descendant thinks possible they came from Ireland at some point, I'd be most grateful for any details you can provide.

regards margaret

Megan,

With your indepth knowledge of the Martin family can you ascertain if the following have a link - its a bit too confuddling for me!

Ann Martin bc 1828 father James as noted on her marriage cert in Aug 1852 to a John Barnicoat in Falmouth. James was a labourer and from later census records I have her birth parish as St Gluvias.  I think I have her on the 1841 census thus:-

LAITY MOOR
James Martin  30   Labourer In county
Mary Martin    30
Ann                12
James            10
Elizabeth         9
William             7
Sarah              5
Jane                3
Martha            1

I have been unable to trace with certainty her line further back due to the prevelence of the name(s) involved.  In the midst of Dunstan and other Martin's noted now!

Any assistance or information you could offer would be appreciated.

Many thanks

Jude

At last a ray of sunshine. I have details of the children of James who emigrated to austrlia but unsure as to how to post these.

I'm actually a descendent of William, son of James Martin. All details listed for the children are correct although the death certificate I have for James indicates he was born in 1807 to James Martin and Margaret Vray.

Hi there

Well I only still have the information on this thread and what I had before - ie the forward march of Ann Martin aged 12 on the 1841 census.

So any information going further back (and siblings info) than James Martin b 1807 and his parents (james and Mary) is still hunted from this branch of the tree.

Any forward information of the family that lived mainly in Falmouth and then up North I will be happy to assist when and where I can

The 1841 census data for James andMary Ann is correct. The death certificate I have for James Martin indicates that

a. he died 14th August Maryborough Victoria, Australia age 71 yrs
b. his age was given as 71 yrs
c. he married Mary Ann Martin c. 1828
d. he then married Sally or sarah Evans c. 1848
e. his parents were given as James Martin (miner) and Margaret Martin, formerly Vray

James left for the Australian goldfields c. 1854 on the "Marco Polo". I have been unable to find any record of the death of either of his wives in Cornwall.

Ann remained in the UK while the following made their way to Australia via NZ on the "Tiptree", arriving in NZ on 21st Jan 1864.
a. William Martin and  wife Susan Hooper and their children Mary Ellen and Sarah May,
b. William's siblings John Martin, Jane Martin and Sarah Anne Martin

Sarah Anne Martin remained in NZ where she married while the other members of the family travelled by steamer to Hobson's Bay Victoria, Australia.

Is anyone able to assist with details of the father of James born c. 1807 and of the deaths of his wives?

My g.grandmother was asked quite a bit as to where the family roots came from.

My great grandfather was Nicholas Charles Barnicoat, his mother Ann Barnicoat nee Martin, hence the link.  Ann Martin was John Barnicoat's second wife and she ended up in Lancashire due to her eldest (step)son becoming chapel keeper in Rochdale (From John Barnicoats first marriage)

There are no family stories et al re Australia - all this info is new.....wow .....after so many years of searching..... wow.

More questions than answers as usual then eh!!!!

Thanks for the prompt reply. Enclosed is an earlier version of my family tree with most members. Generation 1 indicates the first in Aust. I have to hand a much larger word document with all the details of the family's arrival but don't know the best manner in which to send this. It's quit a large file. What is of interest is that we know James left behind members of his family and that he lost touch with them. By all accounts he was a bit of a rascal and to date I haven't been game enough to search court records for his time in Cornwall.
