Help with RAF wings
« on: Sunday 31 December 06 15:13 GMT (UK) »
Hi everyone.

I'm hoping someone can throw some light on these two sets of RAF wings which we found in my mum's jewellery box after she died. My daughter who is currently in the RAF, says you don't get wings unless you are a pilot, but I only know of one relative who was, and the two sets are different. She hasn't seen them, we have only just found them.

Can anyone help? Here's hoping anyway!

Thanks Veron  :)

Veron,
they look like 'sweetheart' wings, worn as a brooch by loved ones of those who were flyers in the RAF.  The different types may be due to different manufacturers or to being manufactured in different periods (1920s, 1930s etc).

I hope this helps.

Thanks Thudnut, that sounds really likely.  I shall have to have a look at some of the old photos and see if I can spot anyone wearing them!

They are both King's crowns so I would suggest that they are from different dates.

Thank you everyone and Happy New Year...

Now I know what they are, there are loads around if you google foe them. Haven't traced what the crowns mean though, hopefully someone on here might know or maybe when my daughter gets to see them, she might be able to tell me.

Cheers Veron  :)

Hi Veron  :)

Here's a webpage I found that has dozens of RAF sweetheart brooches pictured.  I spotted one that looked like the top one of yours.  Might be worth contacting the webpage owner/master re. ID-ing your ones?

Thanks Prue!

I noticed that one of the brooches on your link is an RFC one from WW1 and the crown on it is almost identical to the smaller one of mine which is what I was hoping  :D

What I suspect is that the smaller one is WW1 from 1918, after the RAF was formed, and the other is WW2, that would fit nicely with what I know my family was doing at the time.  If anyone has any other ideas I'd be pleased to hear them.

Thanks again everyone for all your help.

Veron
