BUTLER Marriage & Birth Lookup Please
« on: Monday 01 January 07 01:24 GMT (UK) »
Hello
I'm looking for the marriage of:
Charles Butler born c 1806 Cambridgeshire to Ann..........(maiden name unknown - she was born c 1811 Cambridgeshire) who married about 1830 in Cambridgeshire.
I realise this is very early years and records may not exist.

They had a son George born June 1840.  I would like to know if there were any other children from the marriage of Charles & Ann.

Hoping someone can help out here.  Many thanks,
Cheers, Chris

Hi Pam
Thanks for such a quick reply.

Could I trouble you to see if the family are still in the UK in 1851.  They came out to Aust and Charles & Ann and son George are buried in South Australia.

I dont when they they emigrated so would like to narrow down the years and find out if they were still in Cambridgeshire for 1851 census.
Thanks very much.
Chris

Hi Chris,

You may find this site of the Cambridge FHS useful. Has Baptisms from 1801 and census indexes for look it up for you.

Hello again

I believe   :-\   I've found the Butler family in 1851 census as 'Buttler' and Charles is listed as publican.  Are there lists of hotel and publicans?  Is there any way I can find out the name & address of the hotel where Charles was.

Cheers from Chris in Aust.

In a small village like Gt Eversden with only 3-400 inhabitants the chances are that he was a publican running his own pub from his own house - unfortunately there were no street names or other identifying features, including names of pubs, in Gt Eversden in 1851.

The 1830 Pigots Directory doesn't even mention Gt Eversden.

Possibly Cambridge Record Office would have records of licence applications.

Also check out A2A

http://www.a2a.org.uk/search/documentxsl.asp?com=1&i=3&nbKey=2&stylesheet=xsl\A2A_com.xsl&keyword=butler%20&properties=0601

There's an interesting entry which looks as though Charles and family were selling up prior to emigrating in 1853. That document might give an address, and is available at Cambridge Records Office. There's also another item mentioning Charles Butler of Royston, which is where he was born according to the 1851 census.

Do you have full details of 1851 - on Ancestry that entry is indexed as Ruttlen - there are a couple of children who don't appear in 1841 which is slightly odd. And to go back to your original question if you are sure the 1851 couple are yours, then Ann gives her birthplace as Haslingfield. If you check the IGI at www.familysearch.org you'll find an 1826 marriage in Haslingfield between Charles Butler and Ann Charles.

Regards

David

Hi David
Many thanks for your help.

I know that Charles & Ann Butler had two sons, George & John who lived in the same street in South Aust. This is what makes me think the 'Buttler' family in the 1851 census and the 1841 census provided by Pam, may be the same family and the one I am after.  George & John married cousins, Emily & Sarah Cornelius.  I didnt know about the other children until I found the census details.

Charles died Sep 1873 age 70 years. Ann died 1889 age 83.

I dont subscribe to Ancestry (yet) but I've seen the IGI marriage for Charles Butler & Ann Charles.

With regards to the A2a  entry, I guess you are referring to the sale of furniture.

Do you think my best bet would be to contact the Cambridge FH society.

Cheers, Chris
