Hi

Official registration did not start in Scotland until January 1855 so the only possiblility would be a baptism record. These are those that were recorded as having been carried out according to the form of the Established Church (Church of Scotland). Not all have survived. Those that have are on the IGI and on Scotlands People.

Do you know what religion he was?

To locate his parents - if he married or died in Scotland after 1855 - you could get sight of his marriage or death certificate. These will usually have them listed.

aweepeep,

There seem to be several threads about this gentleman and/or about his birthplace  ???

It is a very good idea to cross-reference to earlier threads in order to save RootsChatters from unnecessary duplication of searches.  And also a good idea to provide as much information as you have so that RootsChatters aren't spending time posting suggestions which you already know are not relevant e.g. you already know that he married in Liverpool (not in Scotland).

It is entirely possible that there is NO record of his baptism to be found, and similarly it is entirely possible that there is NO record of his parents' marriage to be found.  Of course you can hope but ...

Perhaps you will find John CAMPBELL with his parents ...

Hi,

My ggf John Campbell born 21 July 1826 Longleys Perth.
He obtained his Masters Certificate 10334 issued 10 May 1854 at Dundee.
At the time he was living at 31 Exchange Street Dundee.
I know that he served his apprenticeship from 1 January 1840 to February 1844
on a ship called - Thelis - which was registered in Dundee.

Would anyone know if I can locate his apprenticeship records, details of the ship, where the ship sailed and if there are any old photos.

Would much appreciate any help.

Regards

I'm looking for a birth record of my gggf john campbell born 21 july 1826.
I have looked in several family history sites, without any luck.
His birth date was obtained from his Master Mariners Certificate No 10334
issued Dundee 6 may 1826.
This is my first post resuming from many of absence from this site.

Many thanks.
A weepeep

I'm looking for a birth record of my gggf john campbell born 21 july 1826.
His birth date was obtained from his Master Mariners Certificate No 10334
issued Dundee 6 may 1826.
Are you sure? If he was born on 21 July 1826 he wasn't born when his Master Mariner's Certificate was issued, which seems unlikely. So which is the correct date?

Edit: now that this latest message has been merged with your older threads I can see (a) that the certificate was not issued in 1826 and (b) that you have already started half a dozen threads with exactly the same query. As JAP told you 13 years ago, this is not a good idea because multiple threads lead to confusion and duplication of effort.

I think that the name of his daughter, Elizabeth Baxter Campbell, is good enough evidence that his mother's name could have been Elizabeth Baxter, so the marriage you found is likely to be correct. However the marriage record is very unlikely to tell you anything about their parents, being long before the start of civil registration.

You keep on mentioning the LDS IGI but are you aware (a) that it is an ***index*** and does not necessarily have access to the original documents (b) that it is not comprehensive and (c) that it contains some very curious bits of 'information' that cannot be verified from an original document. (Though I am relieved to see that they seem to have removed the family tree of the Norse gods, including dates of baptism, that used to feature there.)
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.
