When did Christopher marry? Was it in Scotland?

Also, do you know when he died? If in Scotland and after 1855, the details of his parents would be on his death certificate.

I think there may be another possibility.
Joebhoy has given the details of your Charles at Middleburn, Eskdalemuir in 1841. Also at Middleburn, but in a different household, were:-
Margaret Dixon  74  Pauper
Elizabeth Dixon  37 Ag Lab
Margaret Murray 19 Ag Lab
Mary Johnston     6
All were born in Dumfriesshire

Moving to 1851, still at Middleburn:
Margaret Dickson  Head W  84  Pauper (formerly Servant)
Elizabeth Dickson Dau  U    48  carrier
Margaret Murray GDau U    28 Employed in House
Mary Johnston    GDau  U   16 Employed in House
All were born in Eskdalemuir

However, also at Middleburn in 1851, were:
Charles Dickson  Head  Widr  65  Ag Labourer
Janet Dickson Dau U 40     Employed in house
John Dickson Son U 33   Ag Labourer
James Dickson Son U 31   Ag Labourer
Christopher Irving  Grson   7  Scholar
All the adults were born in Eskdalemuir, Christopher was born in England.

I don't believe Middleburn is on recent OS maps but the Grid Reference is/was NY258974. It is on www.old-maps.co.uk

I THINK  Fingland - the home of Jean Little in 1851 - should have in fact been Eskdalemuir not Canonbie.

In 1841 there is also a Jean Little  at Fingland with Alexandr Welsh who was 65 and an AgLab.  Her age is given as 'not known'.  Both were born in Dumfrieshire.  In 1851 Jean Little was on her own at Fingland as Joebhoy described.

But how does one rationalise the Jean Little at Middleburn in 1841 with the Jean Little 'up the valley' at Fingland also in 1841?  In 1851 Charles Dickson was a widower indicating that his wife (Jean Little?) had died. It would appear the Jean Little at Fingland was not connected with AD's Charles at all.

For now :)

Thanks again!

I have some information from another family member that said that Thomas Armstrong was born in a place called Harelawhagg- but I don't know if it's right. The year I have is 1791, so it's probably the one you found.
Back to Christopher- sadly his death certificate is not legible- he died in 1908 in Victoria.

There is an old family story that this family was related to the GRahams of Nethrby- but I can't find any reference to it in reality!

Thanks for the ehlp- any more you can find would be appreciated.

Harelawhagg did and still does exist.  Visit www.streetmap.co.uk and key in the place Harelawhagg.   It did exist in 1851 as well of course.  There were 5 households there including one Armstrong household.  The Head  was 61 yr old Duncan Armstrong a widower.
If you wanted them all a visit to the Historical Indexes at www.dumgal.gov.uk should prove useful.

Does anyone have ready access to Annan, Lockerbie or the Ewart Library?  Could they perhaps contact me by Personal Message please?

AD,

A little more information for you.  About Charles and Jean/Joan Dickson

Buried at Watcarrick Burial Ground
Memorial says that Charles died at Middleburn in Aug 1863 aged 82
His spouse Joan (sic) died at Middleburn January 1847 age 63.
There is a Dickson on the reverese who died at Curie in 1780.

An up to date book of the Eskdalemuir and Watcarrick memorials is to be published shortly I understand.
