Help trying to read census info
« on: Monday 01 January 07 14:55 GMT (UK) »
Hi all,

Can anyone who has access to the 1901 census help me decypher the jobs of Alice and Betty Ainscough on the following page...

RG13; Piece: 3546; Folio: 39; Page: 39.

To me it looks like Jam worker????!!!

TIA

Hi Stuart,

I had a quick, free, look at 1901 census site and Alice is described as "jam worker" and Betty as "Super jam worker".  Guess Betty was a supervisor!

Hi Stuart

I think you're right, Jam Worker and Super Jam Worker.  Someone has written the word 'sweet' alongside.

Hi Stuart

Nothing coming up on Google!

You could try an email to the secretary of the Ormskirk & District FHS to see if they can shed light on it.

If you go to their website, the contact details are there

I found this:

Sept. 18. 1936  -  Eclipse Works, Bradford Place, Wigan, used by W. R.Deakin Ltd. in jam production for fifty years, sold by auction for £3,000

at: http://www.wiganworld.co.uk/stuff/chronology9.php?opt=chrono&yr=1936

On the same site it mentions something about Lathom, which I think is near Wigan ?

Chorlton -  Ashton Under Lyne, Cheshire/Lancashire
Common - Halifax, Yorkshire & Scotland <a href="http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,198195.0.htmll">Common One Name Interests</a>
Clegg - Yorkshire
Barber - Ashton Under Lyne, Cheshire/Lancashire
Hadfield - Ashton Under Lyne, Cheshire/Lancashire
Whitley - Yorkshire

Thanks for the info Chorlton, but I don't think this would be the place as lathom is nearer Ormskirk than Wigan, they would have a journey of about 20 miles to Work.
