Welcome to Rootschat! :)

You can search the Immigration Records, although it will be a long process, as they haven't been transcribed yet. You would have to search by year and/or port.

Passenger Lists, 1865-1922
http://www.collectionscanada.ca/archivianet/passenger/001045-130-e.html

Here are some links to his Attestation Papers. It shows his wife as "Ada" or "Eda"

If you would like to see more information with regards to military file, you can request through the National Archives Canada.

Thanks for your help Janice.
In fact, I have obtained copies of his service record from the link that you've given and also found his family on the 1911 census.
What I'd really like to know now is how to trace the descendants of his two sons, John and Berty. Is there a similar births, marriages and deaths record, to the one we have in U.K.? If so I'd be able to find out if they married and maybe go down that route.
Thanks again.

Hi,

As far as marriage and/or deaths, here is a link that shows the address of the Ministère de la Justice
http://www.etatcivil.gouv.qc.ca/English/index.htm

This link will explain who can apply and what is needed.
http://www.etatcivil.gouv.qc.ca/English/Conditions.htm

If not in Quebec, you can check for address and/or website of who to contact.
http://www.collectionscanada.ca/genealogy/022-906.006-e.html

You can also search for them on Lovell's Directory for Montreal. It will only give their names, and address, but not members of their family. Click on the links at the left side of the page (they are in french).
http://bibnum2.bnquebec.ca/bna/lovell/index.html

With the above link, you can also search for John Wells to see when he first moved to Montreal.

I am assuming that "Bertie" is Albert?

If so, this is a long shot, but.....

I'm afraid that Berty is his recorded name on all census, not Albert.

Do you have the birth cert for him, as there isn't one Berty Wells on the BMD but there are dozens of Bertie Wells. J.J.

Good point. Thanks for that J.J. Afraid I haven't invested in a copy of the birth certificate.
He is recorded as Bertie on the 1901 census, in Kensington London where he is 3weeks old.
But on other records he is Berty, so could be a variety dependiing on the transriber.
