And after heaving the books off the shelf at the FRC you had to find a space to read them! Do you remember the tut tuts if you inadvertently "took" someone elses place?

Ah, those were the days!!    Many a "happy" hour have I spent struggling with those books!

Same here! But the wonderful feeling when you eventually found something cannot be beaten!!!

It is such a boon to have these indexes available online.
But it never ceases to amaze me how many Rootschatters seem to rarely use them. I fail to see how anyone can 'do' family history at all without them. Many 'requests' seem to ask about, for example, information on John Brown, born about 1843, or Mary Green died about 1972. Surely the first thing to establish about each individual is an actual date of birth / marriage/ death? Or at least down to the quarter and year.
I have noticed on many occasions, Andrea, your very sound advice directing people to the full indexes. Good for you!!!!!!

Happy hunting, everyone!

Looks like neither of us can get the 'quote' thing quite right this year!!!!!!!!!

Anyway, Lisa who started this thread, why not give us a name or two and see if we have any more luck searching?

Hi Lisa

What area are you looking at?  Some local registrar's indexes are now searchable on-line too.  This can sometimes be quicker than looking through the full GRO index.

Hi Lisa

Got your PM.  All the various London boroughs and counties can confuse things a bit.  I'm not familiar with it at all.

But if you want to find out if the BMD indexes are searchable on line for a particular area, go to the local '.gov.uk' site  (eg.  www.Hillingdon.gov.uk) and look for their on-line services.

Not all areas are doing this yet but more are becoming available all the time so it's worth checking.

Good luck  :)
