Would anybody have any information or suggestions on how to research an ancestor who served in the Garda?

My grandfather who lived in Newbridge, Kildare was photographed in his Garda uniform in his wedding photo around 1918.  It would be nice to know his length of service and where he served.

I know nothing of the Garda, how and when it was formed etc.  Gateful for any information.

Best wishes

Hi SevenThree and welcome to RootsChat !  :)

There is a Garda museum and archive .... I'm not sure if it is up and running .... but it might be worth an email ... even if they can't help you .... they may be able to steer you in the right direction !  :)

Hi Annie,

Thanks for your reply - I had a look at their website and it's quite informative.  It states that the Garda wasn't formed until 1922 (previously the Royal Irish Constabulary).  As their first (surviving) child was born in 1919, I can only assume that his uniform in the photo is RIC - unless it remained the same when the force changed its name.

I will email them for information and attach a copy of the picture - see what they can come up with.

Thanks again,
