Parish records ~ Marriage
« on: Tuesday 02 January 07 20:21 GMT (UK) »
Hi Guys,

Sorry if this is a  "silly" question ..... but do the parish records for marriages show the fathers name?

Thanks,
Chelsea

If you mean pre-1837, sometimes they do, sometimes they don't.  More likely they don't.  Some parish priests captured a lot of info, others were put on this earth to frustrate the genealogists of the future, by ensuring there was minimal info for posterity.

PS not a silly question at all.

A useful summary of what is usually found in most parish registers - though there are some exceptions.

http://www.kenaud.dircon.co.uk/parish.htm

and what is found on civil registration certificates after July 1837

Many thanks Julian,

Sorry ~ yes, I did mean pre 1837.

Hopefully, the parish priest at the time was extremely efficient and recorded all the info that I needed!!!  ;D

Thanks again

Marriage register entries are more likely to include the father's name if the bride or groom was a minor.

If a couple married by licence, the licence often gives the names of the father, and occupation if you're lucky.

Thanks also to Bearkat & Valda (excellent link Valda)

I'm after  the name of the "Father of the Bride"!!

So, if the marriage records don't 'generally' show the brides fathers name, I guess I need to search the Parish records for the birth of the child (bride) to get the fathers name???

Is it worth posting a request on the Staffs board to see if someone can check the parish records for me?

Cheers,
Chelsea

Have you looked on the IGI?

I'm not familiar with Staffordshire so don't know how good the coverage is.
