China, thanks for your suggestion - as I really suspect she was French, a variation in spelling on an Aussie certificate would be quite likely!

Could it be Leonard? Maybe that's an 'n' in the middle and we are being confused by a riser from the row beneath.

I don't think it's a "p" because the "p" in Joseph is very different.  Nonetheless it could still be.
I don't think it's Leopold because I have culled detailed listings of Leopolds over the last couple of years, and have never found such a person yet.  In fact there are no Isabella bmds at all in England, as far as I know, except for a Marie Isabella LEOPOLD, who was born in 1925 and died in London in 1989 - probably her married name.
I have also spent untold bleary-eyed hours examining original listings with names that look like Leopold.  My best guess is that it's LEOFFORD, LEOFFARD, or LEOPPARD.  I'm pretty sure I've seen LEOFFOLD come up here and there, and LEOPARD is common.  A lot of people with similar names seem to have come from France, if they didn't come from Germany, including the LEOPOLDs who settled in Wales.  It's not unusual to find a name or spelling that only occurs once, when looking through these listings.
Sorry I can't be any more help.

At first glance, I thought it might be something like Leggard.  On second glance, I'm doubting it, but you never know.

It's fascinating seeing my list of possible names growing - and I am investigating them as far as I am able. If Isabella was from France, that is going to make the task even more difficult.

I really appreciate all the responses.
