Thanks for all the replies and the effort put into the research. I have been trying to find out more about this lady for about five years  and have learned more from your replies than I have from 5 years of banging my head against a wall!

Thomas Betton, Esther Ann's husband between Mr Prosser and Mr Merryman was my great grandfather.

David Prosser looks good for the previous husband, despite the Maggie (a clerical error by a busy enumerator possibly).

Robbins as her surname when she married Mr Vale also looks good. But was she Miss or Mrs Robbins???? Your replies have definitely given me food for thought.

Thanks again for all your help - brilliant work!

Here's a little summary of where you seem to be so far:

1902 Esther = MERRYMAN

1901 census Esther Anne BETTON wid b 1858 Winterburn Som

1892 Esther Ann PROSSER = Thomas BETTON

1891 census Maggie PROSSER b 1861 Winterburn Bristol (husband David)

1885 Esther VEALE = David PROSSER

1884 Esther ROBBINS = James VALES or John VALE Cardiff

1881 ? Esther ROBBINS - where?

1871 ?

1861 ? presumably (but not necessarily) in Gloucestershire

1858 approx Esther born Winterbourne?

So we need to find Esther in the years before 1884 when she married VALE(S).

Off to have a look!

kind regards, Arranroots  ;)

Heres a possible and right age this time.
As Arranroots said try Esther or Hester

Baptism 12th June 1859
Hester Dau of Thomas and Emma Pinnock ,Winterbourne,Father-Labourer
Source-Winterbourne Family History Online has Parish Records on there.

1861 Winterbourne Street,Winterbourne,Glou
RG9 Piece 1742 Folio 111 Page 13

Thomas Pinnock,Head,55,Ag Lab,Minchinhampton,Glou
Emma Pinnock,Wife,42,Frampton Cotterell,Glou
Mary Pinnock,Dau,17,Frampton Cotterell,Glou
William Pinnock,Son,9,Winterbourne,Glou
Thomas Pinnock,Son,5,Winterbourne,Glou
Hester Pinnock,Dau,2,Winterbourne,Glou

1871 Winterbourne RG10 Piece 2574 Folio 62 Page 20

William Pullen,Head,56,Felt Hatter,Winterbourne,Glou
Emma Pullen,Wife,46,Frampton Cotterell
Thomas Pinnock,Son in Law,15,Winterbourne,Glou
Esther Pinnock,Dau In Law,12,Winterbourne
Lucy Pullen from home.

Looks like their Mother remarried and they are step children not in laws.
However shes just a possible we d need her maiden name off marriage cert to be certain .And if it is her we need a marriage from Pinnock to Robbins or ?

Best Wishes Welsh Lady

I agree that the PINNOCK family looks good.  I was a bit distracted by the number of Winterbournes there are around the country, but she consistently says Bristol, so I think that will be the right one.

Could be a few marriage certs to buy in order to confirm the whole story - and the death certs !!! of the husbands.

Fascinating!

Might be worth getting this birth cert
Lizzie Betton june qtr 1893 Pontypridd vol 11a pg 488
to see how many former names there are for Esther, that is if she told the registrar and there was enough room in the box on the cert to record them.
Intriguing! Do let us know the results!
